Data Center Transformer Changeover: Six Checks Before Adding New IT Load

A practical pre-change checklist for load growth, cooling, protection, switching and monitoring at live power facilities.

Plan the change around the live load, not only the transformer nameplate

When a data centre adds IT load or changes a transformer arrangement, the site team needs a documented changeover plan. The practical objective is to keep protection coordination, cooling capacity, cable terminations and monitoring points aligned before the work window begins.

Six checks before the maintenance window

  • Load profile: review measured demand, expected growth and any concentrated non-linear loads.
  • Cooling readiness: confirm forced-air fan operation, controller settings, alarms and spare-fan availability.
  • Protection settings: verify the approved relay settings, CT ratios and single-line diagram revision.
  • Connections: inspect accessible terminations, earthing connections and signs of heat or looseness.
  • Transfer sequence: agree the switching order, hold points and responsibility for each command.
  • Monitoring handover: check that temperature, load and alarm data remain visible after the change.

Use the first operating week as a validation period

Trend load, temperature and cooling status against the approved operating plan. Any unexpected temperature rise, fan cycling or communications gap should be investigated while the changeover team and records are still available.

For a dry-type transformer installation, share the loading profile, transformer details, cooling arrangement and required monitoring interface. We can help review compatible cooling fans, sensors and gateway options.
